Energy Tips
Yes, gasoline prices are up and summertime brings a heavy use of electricity. By being energy aware, you can behave energy smart. Follow these guidelines during summer activities.
Driving
Make sure tires are properly inflated; tires lose air every week and properly inflated tires cause less friction on the road, using less energy to move your vehicle.
Use energy-conserving motor oil as your car allows such as 5W-30. Using a thinner oil reduces friction and increases your mileage.
Use your windows around town, and save the air conditioner for highway driving. Closed windows cut air drag at fast speeds.
Reduce trips; take your lunch to work.
Cooling
Set your air conditioning between 78-80 degrees and use fans to help maintain comfort levels.
Make sure your exterior air conditioning unit is free of vegetation to ensure adequate air flows.
Make sure your windows and doors are tightly closed and sealed. Any escaping air will require the air conditioner to work harder.
Turn your air conditioner off when you are not home, or maintain it at a higher setting. Save energy while you aren’t home.
Close drapes or shades during the day.
Water Heating
Set the hot water heater thermostat between 110-115 degrees.
Use low-flow showerheads.
Wrap your hot water supply pipes with form fit pipe insulation starting with the pipes that leave the hot water heater. This snap-on insulation is available at home improvement stores.
Cooking and Appliances
Avoid using the oven; use the stovetop, microwave and outdoor grill instead.
Turn off all lights when not in use.
Replace your lights with compact fluorescent bulbs that use a quarter of the energy and last much longer. Make sure that the bulb you choose gives you the same lumen output as a traditional bulb.
Turn off computers, monitors and other electrical equipment when not in use.
Use an outdoor clothesline.
Use an exhaust fan when you cook and in the shower to remove humidity.
